Every year since the collapse of the Soviet Union thousands of Hasidic Jews (Hasidim) gather in Uman, a town of 100 000 inhabitants in the center of Ukraine.
Lay people and religious figures, they all come here from around the world to celebrate the “Rosh Hashanah” (the Jewish New Year) at the grave of their spiritual leader, a great teacher of the Torah : Rabbi Nachman of Breslov (1772-1810).
This four days pilgrimage transforms the quiet city of Uman into an international hub of the Hasidic movement. It sees, united in prayer and festivity, Jews thousands of kilometers away from their home places. "Uman, Uman, Rosh Hashanah !" became their rallying cry on this holy day.
NB. "Rosh Hashanah" or "Rosh Hashana"
